HYSTERICALLY INSPIRED -
USING HISTORICAL SOURCES TO INTERPRET EARLY GUITAR MUSIC
In this workshop we will explore some of the problems of referring to historical sources when interpreting music, especially guitar music from the 19th and early-20th Centuries. Issues such as tempo rubato, tempo flexibility, ornamentation, embellishment, dynamics, vibrato, portamento, instrument and timbre shall be addressed in particular detail. We'll also discuss sources from the early- and mid-19th Century which deal with these issues, and talk about different modern performers who draw on these sources. Participants will be invited to share their own experiences of this music, whether in performance or as audience members, and be inspired to explore early guitar music more profoundly and take greater risks in their interpretations.
