A PATHWAY TO IMPROVISATION ON THE CLASSICAL GUITAR
It's fascinating to learn that improvisation used to be a standard part of performance practice yet gradually disappeared in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some classical musicians today aspire to improvise as a means of developing their creativity and identity. However, it's unfortunate that most classical music tutors are not equipped with the necessary skills to teach improvisation.
In my workshop, I present interviews with some of the most prominent improvising classical guitarists on acquiring improvisation skills. Then I compare their answers to both classical and jazz improvisation methodologies. After that, I demonstrate how this has enabled me to envision and initiate my pathway to improvisation. Finally, I offer a path for performers seeking to establish their improvisational identity within classical music structure.
